Doctor Assault Row: IMA Pauses Strike After Bombay HC Cracks Down on Bail Order

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called off its planned nationwide strike on July 20, after the Bombay High Court stayed the bail given to a Shiv Sena corporator, accused of assaulting a doctor. For patients across the country it is a massive relief, as they can now look forward to hospitals and clinics operating as usual while the legal process unfolds.

The assault case had triggered widespread outrage among doctors who said violence against healthcare workers has become a growing problem. The strike was called by medics to demand tougher legal protection and stricter action against those involved in attacks on doctors.

Court's Ruling Offers Temporary Relief

The controversy broke out after the lower court granted bail to the accused corporator, which was highly criticised by the medical community. The IMA termed the decision ‘disappointing’ and called for a nationwide protest, saying it was important to send a ‘strong message’ that violence against doctors will not be tolerated.

Patients’ welfare is given priority

Patient care is our top priority,” said the IMA announcing suspension of the strike. The association said that the High Court intervention showed the seriousness of the issue and that the judicial process was taking it forward.

The organisation also emphasised that the suspension of the protest doesn’t mean that the issue has been resolved. “We will be watching the case closely and continue to advocate for more protections for healthcare professionals,” it said.

Doctors Still Look for Better Protection

Doctors in India say they are regularly abused, threatened and even physically assaulted while on duty, making violence against them a recurring problem in the country. Medical societies have repeatedly called on governments to enforce laws to protect doctors and hospital staff rigorously.

The IMA said safety of healthcare workers is not only important for doctors but also for smooth functioning of hospitals and well-being of patients.

The Bombay High Court’s stay on the bail order will keep the case under judicial watch. Doctors’ organisations across the country are expected to keep a close eye on the proceedings, hoping for an outcome that would serve as a strong precedent against violence in healthcare settings.
