Tukaram Mundhe’s 25 Transfers In 21 Years: The Nagpur Episode That Put Him In The Spotlight

A Career Defined By Frequent Transfers
Tukaram Mundhe joined the Indian Administrative Service in 2005 and has since served in several key positions across Maharashtra.

In March 2026, records showed he had been transferred 25 times in 21 years, making him one of the most frequently transferred bureaucrats in the state.

Supporters credit him for his action-orientated and tough decision-making approach. Critics, however, point to his short tenures and the controversies that have often followed him.

The Controversial Nagpur Posting
Mundhe took charge as Nagpur Municipal Commissioner in January 2020. His tenure came during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, adding pressure to city administration.

The major flashpoint was the Nagpur Smart and Sustainable City Development Corporation Limited (NSSCDCL). Mundhe assumed additional charge as CEO of the Smart City agency, a move that later triggered a dispute over whether due procedure had been followed.

In June 2020, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari wrote to the Centre, seeking action against Mundhe. Gadkari alleged that Mundhe had taken over the CEO post without proper authorisation and raised questions over tender-related decisions and other project matters during his tenure.

The issue escalated in July 2020 when the Smart City board removed Mundhe from the CEO position, stating his appointment did not conform to prescribed norms. The board added that while some decisions taken by him were approved, others remained disputed.

Why The Debate Around Him Continues
The Nagpur episode is one of several controversies linked to Mundhe’s career. Despite the frequent transfers and run-ins, he continues to be posted to important roles.

In May 2026, he was appointed Commissioner of Maharashtra’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Mundhe’s career has sparked a wider debate on the balance between bureaucratic independence, political oversight, and administrative accountability. For now, his latest posting adds another chapter to a career already marked by unusually frequent transfers and high-profile assignments.
