Parliament’s Monsoon Session resumed with renewed political confrontation with Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi launching a scathing attack on Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the police action during the recent Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) march in Delhi. Rahul alleged that the security forces had used excessive force, fired pellets on the protesters and demanded an answer from the Centre.

Rahul Gandhi on the issue said, “It is a question of the government dealing with the demonstration and the suppression of democratic voices.” Opposition parties demanded a discussion over the police action saying that peaceful protesters were meted out force including tear gas, lathi-charge and pellet firing. They wanted to know from the Centre the chain of events and the steps taken to maintain law and order.

The government defends security measures.

Security agencies were mobilised to prevent protesters from entering restricted areas near Parliament and other high-security zones, the government said. Authorities said police used standard procedure to control the crowd after barricades were broken through and dismissed claims of unnecessary force. Officials have said their primary concern was public safety and security around Parliament.
