Netaji Remark Row: Bengal Government Strips BJP MP Anant Maharaj of ‘Banga Bibhushan’

The West Bengal government has withdrawn the ‘Banga Bibhushan’, one of the state’s highest civilian honours, from BJP Rajya Sabha MP Nagendra Roy, popularly known as Anant Maharaj, following controversial remarks about Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

The state government reportedly issued the order withdrawing the honour on August 13, 2026, after the MP’s comments about the freedom fighter triggered widespread criticism and a political controversy.

Honour Was Conferred Earlier This Year

Anant Maharaj was awarded the Banga Bibhushan on February 21, 2026, in recognition of his contribution to the social and economic development of the Rajbanshi community.

The award was presented by the West Bengal government as part of its annual state honours. However, the decision to honour him came under renewed scrutiny after his remarks on Netaji became controversial.

Remarks on Netaji Spark Row

The controversy erupted after Maharaj made remarks questioning Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s role and the Indian National Army. Reports said he described Netaji as a “war criminal” and questioned aspects of his leadership.
