PM Modi Says BRICS Can Play Key Role in Tackling Terrorism, Strengthening Global Security

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday made a strong case for the global influence of the BRICS grouping, saying it has a vital role to play in tackling terrorism, cyber threats and the many other complex challenges facing our world today.

Addressing the BRICS Summit in New Delhi to the National Security Advisers of the BRICS countries, Modi said that if the member countries want to ensure global stability and stay ahead of emerging security risks, then increasing mutual cooperation is not an option but a necessity.

Standing united against a common threat

On terrorism, the Prime Minister did not mince his words. He said it was one of the single most dangerous threats the international community faces at present. That’s why he called on the BRICS countries to lock arms and build a much tighter, coordinated front to fight it effectively.

He said BRICS is uniquely positioned to make a real, quantifiable difference in cross-border issues, whether that means shoring up digital defences against cybercrime or knocking terrorist networks down a peg. In his view, modern threats do not respect national borders, so a fragmented response simply won’t work: countries have to cooperate closely.

India’s leadership: Agenda Setting

The address also provided a glimpse of what to expect as India prepares to take over and assume the BRICS chairmanship. Modi said a big part of India’s mission will be to amplify the voice of the Global South.

What we want to do is follow India’s lead and move the conversation to the real fears and hopes of developing countries and to spark serious conversations about global security, economic resiliency and fair development. Modi believes that guiding the group in this manner will naturally create a safer, far more inclusive world order.

What started out as an economic club has changed dramatically over the years. BRICS has evolved into a heavyweight platform for major emerging economies to address everything from global governance and climate change to cutting-edge tech and intelligence sharing. “This meeting of National Security Advisers is a perfect example of the fast-moving shift in the bloc’s focus to deep, strategic security collaboration.

The international community will be watching closely to see how New Delhi shapes the future agenda of the bloc as India prepares to take the driver’s seat. Modi's message was loud and clear: if India is at the wheel, expect a strong focus on tightening counter-terrorism nets, safeguarding the digital frontier and prioritising the interests of developing countries.
