Nasrapur Horror: Court Orders Death Penalty for Bhimrao Kamble

Rarest of rare case 'Nasrapur is brutal,' says judge

A Pune court has given the death penalty to Bhimrao Kamble for the heinous rape and murder of a three-year-old girl in Nasrapur. The crime was considered so cruel by the court that they gave the maximum punishment allowed by law. The incident sent shock waves all over the region, leaving the local residents in shock and mourning.

Delivering the verdict, Judge S.R. Salunkhe said, “The brutal nature of the case falls squarely in the ‘rarest of rare’ category.” Kamble was awarded a hanging till death. The hideous crime had aroused great public indignation and demands for prompt and drastic action. During the trial the evidence produced by the prosecution had been overwhelming, and there had been no room for doubt. After hearing both sides and considering all the evidence, the court concluded that the act was so barbaric and extreme that it deserved the death penalty.

A way forward and defending the vulnerable

The verdict is some closure and justice for the little girl’s family, who have suffered unimaginable grief over the last few years waiting for this day. But at the same time it forces everyone to face the grim reality of crimes against children and the need for speedy justice in such cases. The anger in the community has been aimed at a common commitment to make local neighbourhoods safer for young children.

For the community, the decision ends a painful wait for justice, a sobering reminder of the ongoing fight to protect the most vulnerable. I hope that such decisive legal action will be a deterrent, a strong message that we will not tolerate such unspeakable violence against our youngest members. Law enforcement and child protection advocates are already calling for tougher community watch programmes to stop such tragedies happening again.
