Samay Raina Case Ends: Supreme Court Quashes All FIRs, Praises Disability Outreach Efforts

The Supreme Court on Friday closed the criminal proceedings against comedian Samay Raina and four others in connection with the controversy surrounding remarks about persons with disabilities on the show India’s Got Latent. The court quashed the FIRs and recognised the efforts made by the respondents to promote awareness, dignity and sensitivity towards persons with disabilities.

Supreme Court Gives Legal Relief

The case had attracted significant attention following complaints over allegedly insensitive remarks made during the show. The proceedings involved Samay Raina and other social media personalities, including Ranveer Allahbadia. The Supreme Court's latest order brings the criminal proceedings to an end.

Outreach Efforts Taken Into Account

The court's decision followed steps undertaken by the comedians to support disability awareness and promote the dignity of persons with disabilities. Earlier proceedings had directed them to undertake initiatives aimed at supporting the community and raising awareness.

₹3 Lakh Cost Imposed Earlier

The closure comes after a series of hearings in which the Supreme Court monitored compliance with its directions. In July, the court had imposed costs of ₹3 lakh each on Samay Raina and several others over alleged non-compliance with earlier undertakings, while directing them to file compliance affidavits.

With the latest order, the FIRs and related criminal proceedings have been quashed. The development marks the legal conclusion of a controversy that sparked a wider discussion about freedom of expression, comedy and the responsibility of creators when addressing vulnerable communities.
