Indian billionaire Raj Gupta, chairman of the African Industries Group (AIG), has made headlines after unveiling plans to build what could become Sub-Saharan Africa’s biggest solar-powered steel plant in Nigeria. The ambitious project is being developed in Niger State and is being hailed as a major step towards the marriage of heavy industry with clean energy on the African continent.
Raj Gupta has dedicated more than fifty years to building African Industries Group into one of Nigeria’s largest industrial conglomerates. It has grown from a small steel company to a diversified manufacturing giant with interests from steel and mining to chemicals, glass and real estate. Today, AIG has some 31 manufacturing plants in Nigeria and employs nearly 10,000 people, making it one of the largest industrial employers in West Africa.
