Mahua Moitra Alleges Egg Attack by BJP Workers, Says She Was Held Under Siege for Four Hours

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra was caught in a huge political drama in West Bengal’s Nadia district claiming she was attacked in a coordinated egg attack and held under siege for as long as four hours.

The incident has resulted in a major escalation in the tension between the ruling TMC and BJP. Here’s how the theatrical face-off went down:

Battle of Palashi

The drama broke out in Kaliganj block of Krishnanagar constituency, where Moitra had gone to attend a local meeting of party workers.

  • The Crowd Grows: As the meeting went on, an aggressive crowd gathered along the national highway outside the venue. The protesters waved black flags and chanted "go back" and "chor" (thief) slogans.

  • The “Rain of Eggs” The protest quickly devolved into what an eyewitness described as a literal rain of eggs. Protesters threw eggs, mud and vegetables through the windows of the building.

  • Moitra went live on Facebook and X from a third-floor window, filming the chaos, holding up a Trinamool flag, refusing to back down. The viral footage showed eggs smashing again and again against the walls and glass of the building. Moitra alleged that one of the flying eggs hit her and caused injury.

Police inaction accusations

One of the key flashpoints of the incident was Moitra’s furious public call-out of the law enforcement on the scene. Taking to social media, she directly tagged top state police officials, alleging that local police and central security forces reached the spot but stood around as “mute spectators” refusing to disperse the mob for hours.

Local police officials later pushed back against those claims of inaction, saying that security forces rushed to the scene as soon as they were notified, but that the delay was due to ongoing discussions trying to safely coordinate her exit, which finally happened close to 6:00 PM.

The BJP’s Rejoinder

The BJP has denied any role in the assault, calling the incident an internal matter.

  • Internal Rebellion? But state BJP leaders said the attack was not at all the handiwork of their party workers and was a reflection of internal rifts and public anger from within the TMC’s own local ranks.

  • A Change in West Bengal Politics Some opposition leaders dismissed the importance of the event in a kind of taunting answer, saying humorously that West Bengal politics has always been about crude bombs and gunfire, so a shift to eggs is an improvement.

What’s Next?

The timing of the clash is especially sensitive. The Calcutta High Court had, a day earlier, issued a strict order to the West Bengal government to ensure police register formal FIRs in all the cases of egg pelting against political opponents. Both sides are standing firm with TMC top leadership condemning the attack as blatant intimidation. The investigators are now going through the extensive video footage to identify the attackers.
