Karnataka Cracks Down On Fake PhD Certificates : 249 Guest Lecturers Booked

Criminal cases will be lodged, and the candidates have been debarred for life from future guest faculty appointments.

Extensive verification reveals irregularities 
The action comes after scrutiny of documents submitted during the 2025-26 guest faculty recruitment for government first-grade colleges in Karnataka. 

Officials said the verification was done to ensure that academic standards are being maintained. During the investigation, several PhD certificates were found to be either fake or issued by institutions not recognised for doctoral programmes.

The department said the number of irregular cases was higher than anticipated and asked for immediate intervention.

Ordered in criminal cases  
Officials have asked district authorities and college principals to register criminal cases against all 249 lecturers. 

Officials said it is a serious crime to submit false documents in a government recruitment process, and it undermines public trust in the education system.

The move is also intended to send out a strong signal to others contemplating similar malpractice.

Permanent ban on recruiting 
Besides blacklisting the candidates, the department has also filed cases against them. They will not be allowed to apply for any guest lecturer post in the future in any of the Karnataka government colleges.

Guest faculty are an important resource to fill teaching gaps, especially in arts and science colleges. The department said protecting the integrity of these appointments is critical for students.

The education minister and top officials said verification of academic credentials will now be a standard practice in every recruitment cycle. It's all about quality and credibility," an official said. “We cannot compromise on who is teaching our kids.

Faculty associations and student groups, long-time champions of stricter checks, welcomed the crackdown. The department said the impact on genuine candidates should be minimal and said future hiring would be faster but more transparent.
