Hasina vows to come back to Bangladesh

Sheikh Hasina, the former prime minister of Bangladesh who was ousted from power almost two years ago amid a political storm and massive protests, says she is not finished yet. “I will be back,” she said in a new defiantly worded interview, vowing to return to politics.

The political mission kept alive from abroad

Hasina, who has been in exile in India since her ousting in August 2024, said being physically away from the country does not mean she has stepped back from politics. She didn't give a specific date for her return but said she hopes to go back soon. But she said her return was conditional on Bangladesh restoring democratic norms, political rights and the rule of law. She says she is still running her party, the Awami League, from abroad, behind the scenes, through legal and diplomatic channels.

Facing Past Tragedies, Present Menaces

Asked about the risks of returning, the former premier was unfazed, saying she simply has no fear of death. Her own family history came to mind: the tragic assassination of her father, the founder of Bangladesh, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and most of her family members, in 1975. Throughout her career, Hasina has faced numerous threats and attempts on her own life and said she remains driven to finish what she views as her political mission.

The future of Bangladesh is yet to be decided.

Her comments come at a very turbulent time for Bangladesh. Two years after her departure, the country still struggles with sweeping political changes, with a heated national debate over democratic reforms and the country’s future.
