Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has announced she will return to Dhaka in December despite the risk of arrest or death. Her statement comes as she faces legal challenges and continues to deny all charges against her.
Hasina has been in India since August 2024 when she was ousted by a student-led uprising that ended almost 20 years of rule. Since then Bangladesh has seen dramatic political changes with legal action against several leaders of the Awami League. Hasina herself has been convicted in absentia to death by a war crimes court over allegations linked to the 2024 crackdown on protesters. She has repeatedly rejected the verdict, calling it unconstitutional, politically motivated and an effort to remove her party from national politics.
