Heavy Rain Causes Waterlogging in Mumbai, Traffic Hit Across Several Areas

A strong and intensified spell of the southwest monsoon paralysed large parts of India’s financial capital. The incessant rains prompted an immediate IMD Red Alert, leading to severe waterlogging in low-lying areas, uprooting of trees, disruption of air traffic and a mandatory closure of all city schools and colleges for Monday by the municipal authorities.  

What went wrong?

Underwater Rain Gauges: Heavy rainfall was recorded by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), with Vikhroli West recording 310.6 mm and Colaba Pumping Station in close pursuit at 306.6 mm.  

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport halted all runway operations for an hour around 10:17 AM after visibility dropped to near zero and intense wind gusts hit 42 knots. Dozens of flights were delayed, four cancelled, and 13 incoming planes had to be diverted.  

Transit Choke Points: The Andheri Subway, an iconic landmark, was completely submerged and closed to vehicular traffic. Major railway stations, including the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) in Kurla, reported heavy waterlogging with commuters forced to wade through knee-deep water.

Fatalities and Damage: Strong winds uprooted several big trees in Matunga, Mahim and Ghatkopar, crushing several parked cars. In tragic incidents, a 63-year-old man was killed in Kurla West when an old tree fell on a shop structure, while a 17-year-old boy drowned in the swollen Kamvari river in Thane.  

Why It’s Important

Strain on Infrastructure The deluge was a classic case of Mumbai’s recurring vulnerability to high tides coinciding with intense, short-duration cloudbursts. A 4.19m-high tide on Sunday afternoon had severely restricted the city’s drainage network from dumping stormwater into the Arabian Sea.  

Public Safety Warnings: Mumbai municipal authorities and emergency officials had to actively disperse crowds of onlookers from sea walls at Marine Drive and Worli, warning that the combination of heavy surf, high winds and structural hazards posed immediate dangers.

The heavy Sunday rain has virtually brought normal life to a standstill with the infrastructure of the city heavily compromised. With IMD issuing an Orange Alert for Monday, civic agencies are on high alert and have asked Mumbaikars to avoid non-essential travel.
