Delhi Constable Shoots Wife Dead Hours After Birthday, Family Alleges Dowry Harassment

A Birthday That Ended in Darkness

Priyanka Bhati was only 34 years old. She was a teacher of computer science at a private school. A woman who shaped the minds of children during the day. On Sunday night her family called to wish her a happy birthday and heard her voice, full of life.

But hours later, early morning, around 3:00 AM on Monday, Priyanka was on a dark, poorly lit road near a metro pillar in Kalyanpuri. CCTV cameras caught the last moments of her life: a bitter, heated argument on the roadside with her husband, Manish, a Delhi Police constable.

In a moment of pure horror Manish drew his official service gun, shot his wife in the chest at point-blank range and sped away into the dark on his scooter. He took away her cell phone and left her alone on the pavement, bleeding profusely.

A Stranger’s Desperate Attempt to Help

But the real weight of the tragedy fell on ordinary citizens who just happened to be passing by. A food delivery worker passed through the dark area as he drove and suddenly saw her lying next to the road.

He stopped, horrified by what he saw. Priyanka was alive, trying to speak weakly, and another bystander was desperately looking for water. The delivery worker and a few passersby knew there was no time to wait for an ambulance. They flagged down an auto-rickshaw, helped her into the back and rushed her to the nearby Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital. Unfortunately, her injuries were too severe, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Shadow Behind Marriage

This violent eruption on a public street is the culmination of a painful history of private torture. Priyanka and Manish had tied the knot in an arranged marriage in 2023. Her family said the marriage was soon marred by constant harassment for dowry. Her brother, a police constable in the neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, said how Manish would beat her up and taunt her about how her family had not paid enough money.

Priyanka even ran away back to her parents' home for nine months out of fear. She only came back after family intervention and a solemn promise from Manish that the abuse would stop.

Now her family is confronted with the harsh reality that those promises were hollow. Police teams are in search of the absconding constable, but a family is left to mourn a daughter and sister whose birthday turned out to be the day she was taken away from them.
