The Ever Present Fear of Another Collapse

Imagine yourself sitting outside in the dead of night in a plastic chair, staring at your cracked front door, too scared to go inside because the ground beneath your feet just won't stop moving. That’s the way it is today in northern Venezuela. A 4.8 aftershock on Sunday sent everyone scurrying back into the streets. It didn't bring down any more walls, but it broke whatever sense of safety people had left.

A neighbourhood turned into a survival zone

Honestly, this place is a living hell. We just had two big quakes, a 7.2 and a 7.5, one right after the other. It levelled entire districts, trapping families in their homes and transforming peaceful, everyday lives into a brutal fight for survival.

There is nothing else yet but the rubble. Tired rescue teams, neighbours and volunteers are working through the night. They are digging with everything they have: heavy bulldozers, shovels and often just their bare hands, trying to clear the concrete. Every once in a while someone screams for absolute silence. The machinery stops; everyone holds their breath, listening, praying to hear a faint cough, a cry, a weak tap from someone trapped beneath the heavy slabs.
