Akhilesh Yadav Targets Government Over Alleged Police Action on Student Protesters

Akhilesh Yadav, while addressing the session, questioned the government on its handling of the protest. He alleged that instead of talking to the students gathered to raise issues related to education and exams, including concerns around *NEET UG 2026*, the police used force.

In the Parliament, Yadav said, “The voice of students should be heard and not suppressed.” He called for accountability from the government and demanded a clear explanation why force was used against peaceful protesters.

The SP chief's remarks drew attention both inside and outside the House, with opposition members supporting his demand to discuss the matter.

Protesters, mostly women, cause concern 
Yadav’s criticism was largely aimed at the alleged treatment of women students. He said that several women protesters were mistreated during the police action and that their clothes were torn in the crackdown.

He called on the government to protect the safety and dignity of the students who participated in peaceful demonstrations, particularly the female students. “Protest is the right of the people in a democracy. “If students are not free to speak, where will they go?" he asked.

Yadav said educational institutions and the government need to create an atmosphere where students feel safe to raise concerns without fear of retaliation.

The comments have sparked a new political row over the response to student protests in the national capital. Opposition leaders have called for answers from the government and demanded an independent inquiry into the incident.

But BJP leaders defended the police action, saying law and order has to be maintained and no one should be allowed to disturb public peace.

It is a subject which is expected to be a major talking point in Parliament in the next few days, with both sides expected to raise it in discussions on education and student welfare.

Student groups have also responded, with some supporting Yadav’s statement and others demanding clearer guidelines for protests near Parliament and other key areas in Delhi.

The alleged police action is likely to add fuel to the debate over the need to strike a balance between maintaining order and protecting democratic rights, with the Monsoon Session still on.
