What Your Tongue Can Reveal About Your Health: Warning Signs You Shouldn't Ignore

Doctors say short-term changes in colour or texture are usually nothing to worry about, but ongoing problems could be a sign of an underlying health issue. If something isn’t feeling right for more than a couple of weeks, it’s worth getting checked out.

Red tongue: vitamin deficiency possible
A tongue that is too red or too smooth may indicate a deficiency of vitamin B12, folate, or iron.

It can be the same with some infections. If the colour doesn’t return to normal in a week or two, experts recommend a medical evaluation and blood tests to rule out a deficiency.

White Coating Thick: Check Your Oral Hygiene
Poor oral hygiene, dehydration, or oral thrush can cause a white coating. It is caused by a fungus.

Usually, a daily brushing of your tongue, enough fluid intake, and routine dental care will do the trick. If the coating continues or spreads or if there is pain, see a dentist or doctor to exclude infection. Cracks, sores, and ulcers: Don't Wait It Out. Cracking on the surface of the tongue is very common and usually harmless.

But if you have sores, ulcers, or wounds that are painful and do not heal within 2 weeks, see a healthcare professional. Persistent mouth sores can sometimes be a sign of other underlying health conditions that need treatment.

Daily Habits for a Healthy Tongue
Pretty easy, good oral health:
- Clean your tongue and your teeth
- Drink a lot of water so you don't get dried out
 - Avoid tobacco products
- Visit your dentist for regular checkups

When to Contact Your Health Care Provider
Any persistent pain, swelling, unusual change in colour, or lumps on the tongue should be assessed. Evaluating early can help detect problems before they get worse.

The tongue is the easiest part of the body to examine. “Seeing yourself in the mirror every morning is a great way to catch problems early.
