Don't Ask? Don't Get: 5 Bills You Should Always Try to Negotiate to Save Money

If you want to cut monthly costs without sacrificing comforts, here are five bills worth negotiating:

1. Cable And Internet Bills
Providers are always rolling out new deals, usually for new customers. If your bill has crept up, contact customer service and ask about cheaper plans or current promotions. It also helps to bring up a competitor’s offer into the conversation. Companies would rather lose ₹200-₹300 than lose you.

 2. Medical Bills
Paying out-of-pocket? You can frequently cut the cost: “Request an itemised bill so you can check for mistakes and enquire about financial assistance programmes and whether you can get a discount for paying up front.” Hospitals would rather get something now than send it to collections later.

3. Interest rates on credit cards
Good repayment history is leverage. Call your credit card company and request a lower interest rate. Even a 2-3% cut lowers finance charges and makes it easier to work down a balance over time. Worst case, they say no, they say.

4. Insurance Premiums: Car, health, and home insurance premiums are at their most flexible at renewal. Get 2-3 quotes and then go to your current insurer and tell them you have better. Many will match or beat the price to keep you around.

5. Gym Memberships and Subscriptions
“Before you cancel Netflix, your gym, or any app, ask about retention deals.” Most gyms and platforms have loyalty discounts, student/senior rates, or seasonal promotions they only mention when you’re trying to leave.

A quick chat pays off
It can feel awkward to negotiate at first, but it adds up to savings. Experts advise you to review recurring expenses every 6-12 months and question any increase in price. You won’t win every time, but even 2-3 good calls can save 1000s in a year.

And the rule is simple: Don’t ask, don’t get.
