Ukraine Recaptures 280 Square Miles This Year, Says Outgoing Military Chief
Ukraine’s armed forces have recaptured some 280 square miles of territory in 2026, the country’s outgoing top military commander said. The announcement comes as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is preparing changes in military leadership amid ongoing fighting with Russia.
Military Claims Area
In his final briefing, the outgoing commander said Ukrainian forces had made steady progress this year despite heavy fighting.
He said the 280 square miles was a significant gain, saying operations were focused on pushing Russian forces back in the east and south.
He said the gains were due to coordinated assaults, better logistics and ongoing support from international partners.
Leadership transition starts
Zelenskyy announced a top-level shake-up in Ukraine’s military. “The new commander has assumed command of the next phase of the war.
The changes, he said, are meant to increase efficiency and adapt strategy as the conflict enters another year. He thanked the outgoing chief for his service at a critical juncture.
Fighting is still going on
Despite reported gains, fighting continues in several frontline areas. Russian troops continue to fight in Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia and elsewhere, with artillery and drone strikes continuing on both sides.
Military analysts say the territorial gains have been marginal, and the war remains a grinding battle of attrition. No indication of a ceasefire in the near future.
Continued international community support
Ukraine continues to receive military assistance, funding and intelligence from allies in the US, the EU and other partners. Kyiv officials say the support is vital for ongoing operations and strengthening defence capabilities.
Meanwhile, Ukraine has kept open diplomatic channels, pushing for more long-range weapons and security guarantees.
The departing commander said spirits among the troops remain high. “Little by little we are making progress,” he said. “The message is clear.
Now, with new leaders in place, Ukraine must try to cement gains and prepare for what could be another hard winter of fighting.
