A controversy that is deeply painful has touched the hearts of millions of devotees all over India, with allegations of financial betrayal overshadowing the sacred grounds of Ayodhya’s Ram Mandir. Today the Supreme Court of India intervened, calling for absolute transparency in the face of wide public hurt and outrage. A bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant directed the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Uttar Pradesh government to file a detailed progress report and also put the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust under the scanner to explain how the sacred offerings made by the public were managed.

The allegations seem to be a personal attack on the millions of ordinary people who contributed their hard-earned money to build the temple. Several public interest litigations, including one by RJD MP Sudhakar Singh, have forced the apex court to act, recognising the emotional weight. Petitioners say a local police investigation won't be enough to heal public trust or untangle the financial web. They want an independent probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), a rigorous forensic audit of every digital log, physical ledger and foreign donation, and want the Trust to put its financial statements online for all to see.

The preliminary investigation paints a heartrending picture of structural neglect and individual greed where reverence should have been the norm. Investigators found that temple counting rooms had no basic oversight, and employees counted huge amounts of cash without body frisks or strict bag bans. Eventually security footage captured workers routinely concealing bundles of cash in their clothing. So far, police have arrested eight employees and recovered around 80 lakh, some of it tragically stashed away in a connected toilet. The breach of faith has already forced top trust officials to resign as the community demands justice, but officials have firmly debunked rumours of stolen silver bricks.
