Batwara 1947 gets censor clearance with no cuts; Sunny Deol excited

Sunny Deol is on cloud nine as his hard-hitting upcoming period drama Batwara 1947, earlier called Lahore 1947, got through the Central Board of Film Certification untouched. Today in Bollywood, getting a clean censor certificate without any mandated cuts is a rare victory, especially for a project dealing with historical powder kegs. But the censor board did give it an Adults Only rating, which means the movie refuses to sugarcoat the blood, trauma and raw brutality of the Partition.

The gritty drama is directed by master storyteller Rajkumar Santoshi and produced by Aamir Khan Productions. It is an adaptation of Asghar Wajahat’s legendary play, Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai. The story begins in 1947, in the heat and violence of the partition, when a Muslim family has been forced to leave Lucknow and move to Lahore and finds an elderly Hindu woman refusing to leave her empty ancestral home. Together they ride out the historic storm, and a tense turf war slowly turns into the most human of connections.

A Heavy Cast and a Musical Dream Team

The film has a star-studded cast that has movie buffs salivating, aside from its high narrative stakes. Sunny Deol is joined by powerhouse veterans such as Shabana Azmi, Preity Zinta and a special appearance from Karan Deol.

It is not just the top-notch acting that has drawn the crowds, but the production also has a sweeping original musical score by none other than A.R. Rahman. Santhoshi’s fearless directorial vision and Rahman’s soul-stirring melodies have combined to make this project a cinematic classic, to be experienced on the big screen.

With its censor hurdles now successfully cleared, the hype train is officially chugging full steam ahead for its worldwide theatrical drop on August 14. It is a huge emotional moment for Indian audiences to have a Partition-themed drama releasing on Independence Day eve.
