Veteran actress Sowcar Janaki, one of the most respected names in South Indian cinema, passed away in Chennai on Friday, August 21, at the age of 94. She died at 1:59 pm after being hospitalised with age-related health complications. The news was confirmed by actor and Nadigar Sangam president Nassar.
A Career Spanning More Than Seven Decades
Born Sankaramanchi Janaki, the actress began her film journey in 1950 with the Telugu film Shavukaru, which also gave her the screen name by which she became widely known. Over a career spanning more than seven decades, she appeared in more than 400 films across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam cinema.
Janaki was known for her versatility and ability to portray a wide range of characters. She worked with several leading actors and prominent filmmakers and became particularly admired for bringing emotional depth and authenticity to her performances. Her collaborations with filmmaker K. Balachander also showcased her ability to move beyond conventional character roles.
Honoured With Padma Shri
Sowcar Janaki’s contribution to Indian cinema was recognised with several major honours. She received the Kalaimamani award, Nandi Awards and the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2022, the Government of India conferred the Padma Shri on her for her distinguished contribution to the arts and cinema.
Final Film Appearance and Tributes
Janaki continued to remain connected with the entertainment industry even in her later years. Her final film appearance was in the 2023 Telugu movie Anni Manchi Sakunamule. She also worked in television and theatre during her long career.
Her death has prompted tributes from across the film fraternity. Actors including Kamal Haasan, Jr NTR, Chiranjeevi and Prabhu Deva remembered her contribution and legacy. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay also mourned her passing, describing it as an irreplaceable loss to Indian cinema.
