Two Stabbed in Midday Attack on Upper West Side

Residents of Manhattan’s Upper West Side panicked and went into a frenzy after two unprovoked stabbings in broad daylight just blocks away from each other near Central Park. The attacks, which left two men hospitalised with serious injuries, prompted the NYPD to respond with an immediate and heavy response.

The first attack came around 1:30 p.m. near Central Park West and West 84th Street when a 57-year-old Asian man was stabbed in the back. Minutes later, a second victim, a 50-year-old Jewish man in a yarmulke, who had just left a nearby synagogue, was ambushed and stabbed in the torso with a screwdriver near West 86th Street and Amsterdam Avenue.

Police Action: Quick Response and Capture of Suspect

The suspect, 51-year-old Raul Morales, fled his violent rampage and retreated into his apartment in a nearby New York City Housing Authority building on Amsterdam Avenue.

Inside the residential building, NYPD Emergency Service Unit police officers quickly surrounded him. The tense but controlled standoff ended with officers entering the apartment and arresting Morales without incident. Weapons were recovered at the scene and both victims were taken to local hospitals and are recovering in stable condition.

Hate Crimes Investigations and Their Impact on the Community

As the probe continues, the NYPD’s Hate Crimes Task Force and federal partners are looking closely at whether the attacks are hate crimes. In both attacks, the suspect reportedly yelled the Arabic phrase "Allahu Akbar", NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch and local witnesses said.

Police are also investigating whether serious mental health issues played a role in the suspect’s behaviour. Local civic and religious leaders have appealed for calm and unity and a thorough, transparent probe into what sparked the violence, which has shaken the neighbourhood.
