Russia Launches Major Ballistic Missile Attack on Cities Across Ukraine
Russia has launched a major ballistic missile attack targeting multiple Ukrainian cities, marking another escalation in the ongoing war.
All accounts describe the events of early Sunday morning in Kyiv as a terrifying ordeal for the people living there. The city was hit by a massive, sustained barrage of 41 missiles and 125 attack drones starting around 1:30 a.m. on July 19, 2026, in one of the largest ballistic missile attacks on the capital, President Zelenskyy said.
A Night of Horror
For those caught up in it, the reality of the attack wasn’t quantified in numbers but in the sheer magnitude of the disruption to daily life. Residents said the sound of explosions echoed through the city for hours. One resident, 32-year-old Viktoria Shejko, spent the night in the hallway of her apartment building with her husband and seven children. She described the psychological toll of hearing “one missile after another", which has become harder and harder to bear as the attacks come with agonising frequency, sometimes every other day.
The Human Toll
Sadly, at least one life has been lost and 16 others injured in the attack. Throughout the day, emergency services have been trying to rescue residents from burning buildings in districts including Sviatoshynskyi and Shevchenkivskyi. The damage is visible across five districts, where fires have ripped through apartment blocks, dormitories, warehouses and offices. Even an underground pedestrian crossing, a place many rely on to get around the city, was hit in the Lukianivska district.
The Burden of Uncertainty
It’s hard to imagine how the strength of the people of Kyiv is being tested. Locals have been seen sweeping broken glass from the streets and rummaging through the smouldering debris of their homes. One resident, Vlad, described the gut-wrenching moment when he was in his apartment when a blast ripped off his balcony door. His first thought was his grandmother, who can’t walk, illustrating the impossible choices families are forced to make in seconds.
The city is starting to count the damage, but the larger discussion is about the immediate need for sophisticated air defence systems, the only real protection against these high-speed ballistic threats.
