Rubio Says Iran Wants US Deal but Is Not Ready to Make One as Strikes Continue

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s uncompromising remarks on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit in Manila have drawn a sharp, unyielding line in the sand, underscoring a dramatic hardening of Washington’s diplomatic posture as hostilities enter a volatile new phase.

The Underlying Reality of Backchannel Appeals

Speaking candidly to the international press corps, Rubio revealed that Tehran has been persistently reaching out through both direct and third-party diplomatic channels, attempting to open lines of communication. Characterising these frantic overtures bluntly, he asserted that Iranian officials are "begging every day" for a viable exit strategy and a negotiated settlement.

However, the Secretary of State poured cold water on any immediate prospect of a breakthrough, stating flatly that Washington believes Tehran remains entirely unready to commit to a trustworthy or lasting pact. Pointing to a long, troubled history of broken agreements and last-minute modifications, Rubio emphasised that the United States has lost faith in Iran’s diplomatic good faith, insisting that any future talks must be strictly anchored in verifiable compliance.

The "Head for an Eye" Doctrine

The exchange took a particularly sharp turn when reporters asked for a response to statements made by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Araghchi had recently invoked the traditional regional defence doctrine of "an eye for an eye", warning that any continued aggression against Iranian infrastructure would trigger a powerful, unyielding response.

Rejecting the symmetry of that framing, Rubio countered with a stark amplification of American resolve, declaring that President Donald Trump's administration operates strictly under a "head for an eye" policy. He warned that Tehran will continue to face disproportionate and devastating consequences for any actions targeting American personnel, regional allies, or international maritime commerce.

Rubio’s hardline diplomatic rhetoric is being backed by relentless, high-intensity military operations. His comments coincided with the completion of a twelfth consecutive night of targeted U.S. airstrikes across Iran. According to the Secretary of State, these sustained campaigns have systematically battered the nation's military-industrial complex, wiping out billions of dollars in critical defence assets.

Detailing the extent of the degradation, Rubio noted that the strikes are steadily stripping Tehran of its strategic capabilities, leaving radar networks smashed and missile launchers neutralised on a nightly basis while sending an already fragile domestic economy into a tailspin.
