Rahul Gandhi Sets ‘Non-Negotiable’ Demands for PM Modi and Dharmendra Pradhan Over NEET Protests

The political tussle over the ongoing NEET controversy has reached a new level with Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi setting out strict, “non-negotiable” demands for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

After days of intense student protests and legislative disruptions, Gandhi made clear at a press conference that the opposition will not back down without direct accountability. His demands are as follows:

Prime Minister Modi must apologise to the country’s youth and student community for the trauma and uncertainty caused by repeated exam disruptions, Gandhi said. A Public Apology:

Accountability for Police Action: He called for stern action against the security personnel for using force against peaceful protesters, citing the high-handed actions and clashes during recent student marches in the national capital.

But in his defence, Gandhi quoted staggering statistics on India’s examination ecosystem. “In the last 10 years, there have been 152 examination paper leaks in the country impacting around 7.5 crore students and their families with almost zero major convictions,” he said.

He said the total expenses incurred by the families for the preparation of high stakes competitive exams like NEET is almost equivalent to the entire education budget of the Union government, and highlighted the heavy financial burden imposed on the middle and lower income households.

The Government’s Response vs. The Other Side

This strong stance comes after Prime Minister Modi spoke to the nation's youth and declared his intention to set up fast-track courts that would deliver swift and severe punishment to those involved in paper leaks. The government has invited the opposition to discuss in parliament without preconditions but Gandhi and his allies said institutional trust had been eroded to such an extent that basic political and administrative overhaul was needed first.
