PM Modi Reaches New Zealand On Final Leg Of Indonesia-Australia Tour

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Auckland, New Zealand, concluding a vital three-nation Indo-Pacific tour that featured significant visits to Indonesia and Australia. The visit is hugely significant in terms of history, as it is the first bilateral visit of an Indian Prime Minister to New Zealand in exactly forty years since the visit of Rajiv Gandhi in 1986.

Prime Minister of New Zealand Christopher Luxon welcomed PM Modi on his landing. The two-day state visit is aimed at deepening economic ties, following recent trade talks, and cementing security partnerships throughout the region.

The Grand Strategy: MAHASAGAR and Act East

The Prime Minister described the visit as a key addition to India’s maritime and regional architecture for the long term before heading off on the last leg of his tour.

The MAHASAGAR Framework Modi said the tour is directly taking forward India’s MAHASAGAR framework, an initiative for mutual and holistic advancement for security across the regions. This is New Delhi’s road map for collective maritime security, defence coordination and safe shipping lanes.

Act East Expansion The “Act East” policy, hitherto concentrated on Southeast Asia, is deliberately being pushed further into the Southern Indian Ocean and South Pacific to project India as a trustworthy security and economic partner.

Building the Indo-Pacific: India's close cooperation with Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand is creating a common front for a free, fair and inclusive Indo-Pacific, balancing the geoeconomic concerns in common waters.

Trade, commerce and strategic links

Modi and Luxon’s bilateral meetings are an effort to turn diplomatic good will into raw commerce, riding the momentum of Luxon’s state visit to India.

The two leaders want to boost economic ties, with New Zealand hoping for more access to India’s vast middle-class consumer market. The delegation-level talks will focus on the following key areas:

Boosting Bilateral Trade: Exploring new avenues to expand commerce, integration of the digital economy and technological partnerships.

Education and Innovation – Deepen relationships with universities, student exchange programmes and collaboration on emerging technologies.

Diaspora Energy and 'Kia Ora Modi'

Beyond the closed-door economic and defence talks, the visit will also feature a huge cultural showcase. The prime minister is to address large gathering of Indian diaspora in Auckland

The “Kia Ora Modi” reception, as the event is called, reflects the great excitement in the local community, blending the indigenous Kiwi heritage with the vibrant celebrations of the local Indian diaspora, who form a living bridge between the two countries.
