At least 15 people, including 12 military personnel, have been killed in a brutal overnight suicide bombing in Pakistan's restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The fatal strike took place at a security checkpost in the Tank district when militants rammed a vehicle carrying explosives into the perimeter wall.

The powerful blast inflicted massive structural damage to the post, killing instantly 12 soldiers, two local police officers and a former government forest department official. Following the blast, the security forces and the remaining attackers were involved in a fierce gun battle, in which the troops were able to kill 12 insurgents.

“Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), commonly known as the local Pakistani Taliban, was quick to come forward and claim responsibility for the assault. The militant group said in a statement that four suicide bombers had been directly involved in the coordinated operation.

The incident is a grim reminder of a sharp and alarming escalation in militant violence against security personnel and installations along the porous Afghan border. Islamabad has expressed concern many a time and has accused the Afghan Taliban government of providing safe havens to TTP commanders and facilitating cross-border terrorism.
