A human rights body seeks answers in Bengaluru creche abuse case
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of disturbing reports of abuse of toddlers at a creche functioning inside a corporate IT campus in Bengaluru. The commission took suo motu cognisance of the situation and sent urgent notices to the chief secretary of Karnataka and the director general of police calling for a detailed report within two weeks.
What went wrong?
The problem became apparent after media reports and parents’ complaints exposed the cruel and harsh treatment of very young children by their carers. The programme was set up to help working parents have their children cared for on campus, but it soon became the focus of public outrage when the accusations surfaced.
The Bengaluru Police have registered a case against five creche workers following complaints from distressed parents. Investigators are probing how widespread the abuse was and whether basic safety protocols were ignored by the centre's management.
Demands of the Inquiry and NHRC
"The NHRC said if these allegations are true, then it is a serious violation of human rights of vulnerable toddlers. For accountability, the commission has asked the state government and the police chief to provide a detailed breakdown of the following:
The initial findings of the police investigation.
The specific legal actions being taken against the accused workers.
Immediate actions to protect the children involved.
A concrete plan to avoid such happenings in other daycare centres.
Detectives are busy gathering evidence, reviewing all of the CCTV footage they can get hold of and taking formal statements from both the parents and centre’s staff.
Child Safety in the Spotlight
The incident has cast a shadow over the safety standards of workplace creches and daycare centres across the country.
Child rights experts are taking this moment to push for sweeping systemic change. They’re demanding much tighter government regulation, surprise inspections, mandatory background checks of all carers and easier, safer ways for parents to report red flags.
The Karnataka government and police department have to submit their findings to the NHRC within the two-week deadline. Those reports suggest the commission is likely to issue new guidelines to tighten child protection laws and to hold corporate child-care facilities to a much higher standard.
