Mumbai Braces for Heavy Rain as IMD Issues Red Alert for Weekend
The IMD has put out a red alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad for heavy to very heavy rainfall over the weekend. Authorities have warned residents to expect waterlogging, traffic disruptions and localised flooding.
If you are in Mumbai, this is the official weekend to cancel your outdoor plans, stock up on snacks and stay indoors.
The weather department has issued a red alert, which is basically the highest alert they issue. This means Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad will see non-stop, heavy downpours and will be absolutely drenched through the weekend, i.e., Saturday and Sunday.
We all know how quickly the city can come to a halt when the monsoon really does open up. Some parts of the city are already waterlogged, and it’s only going to get intense.
This is what you can really expect in the real world:
The Roads and Trains: Don't leave the house unless you absolutely have to. “Visibility is going to get bad, the roads are going to turn into rivers, and those infamous low-lying areas and subways are going to fill up quickly.” If the tracks get flooded, you’ll see major delays on the local trains and buses.
The High Tide Trap: The greatest danger occurs when heavy rain coincides with high tide. And when the sea rises, there's nowhere for the city's drainage water to go, and that's often when traditional flood zones get hit hardest.
Civic Teams Ready The BMC and disaster response teams are already on high alert, clearing drains and positioning rescue crews in vulnerable neighbourhoods.
What to do now:
Have fully charged phones and power banks on hand in case of local power cuts. Bring in any loose plants or items from your balcony, as it’s going to get very windy, and double-check that you have enough groceries so you don’t have to order delivery in a downpour.
Be safe, look after your neighbours and enjoy the monsoon from the comfort of your living room this weekend.
