Major Political Twist: Sushmita Dev Leads Trio of Former TMC MPs Into BJP
Three former TMC Rajya Sabha MPs, including Sushmita Dev, have officially joined the BJP.
In a major political blow to the Trinamool Congress (TMC), three former Rajya Sabha MPs joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Kolkata on Thursday. The leaders had resigned from the party and their Rajya Sabha memberships earlier this week to make way for their transition to the BJP.
Three top brass flipsides
Senior leaders of the BJP, including the party’s West Bengal unit president Samik Bhattacharya, were present at the induction event. In addition to welcoming the new members, BJP leaders stated that the addition of seasoned politicians will strengthen the party's organizational structure and enable it to reach a wider audience in West Bengal before the next election.
BJP eyes increasing its footprint in Bengal
The most attention among the three leaders has been generated by the move by Sushmita Dev. She was a former Congress leader who joined TMC in 2021 and emerged as one of the party’s prominent national faces. Her joining the BJP is yet another major political realignment and will have an impact on political equations in the state.

The defections come when the TMC is facing internal challenges after its 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. The exit of senior leaders is a sign of growing disenchantment in sections of the party and may lead to further political realignments in the coming months, political analysts say.
