Ladakh Creates 17 New Tehsils to Bring Government Services Closer to Remote Areas

Ladakh lieutenant governor Vinai Kumar Saxena approved the formation of 17 new tehsils in a major administrative reshuffle. This will take the total number of tehsils in the Union Territory to 32 from the present 15. The move is aimed at reducing the gruelling travel times for the locals and making five newly carved out districts fully functional.
In the vast, rugged terrain of Ladakh and isolated border settlements, residents in remote pockets often had to travel over 300 kilometres to access basic revenue paperwork or district-level government services.

Reforming Border-Zone Bureaucracy

The restructuring is a natural consequence of the formal notification issued at the beginning of this year, which expanded Ladakh from two massive districts (Leh and Kargil) into seven.
The special UT-level committee had found the previous administrative map full of overlapping boundaries. Some older tehsils were spread over several new district boundaries, which was odd. The new rationalisation resolves this by mapping each revenue village to only one tehsil and each tehsil to only one district.

New Administrative Division

The chief secretary has been directed to immediately assign independent charges to tehsildars across the newly carved-out zones so that immediate operational efficiency is ensured. After reorganisation the 32 tehsils are divided among the seven districts as follows:

• 7 Tehsils of Kargil District

• Nubra District: 6 tehsils:

• Leh District has 5 tehsils.

• Sham District has 5 tehsils.

• Changthang District: 4 Tehsils

• Tehsils: 4 Zanskar District

• Drass Tehsil 1

As the revenue framework decentralises, the administration is taking its core infrastructure directly to high-altitude frontier hubs. Beyond cutting travel times, the build-out of these new tehsil headquarters is expected to bring localised grievance cells, faster welfare implementation, and fresh public sector employment opportunities to communities that have historically felt isolated from the capital.
