Hormuz Ship Attack: Trump Accuses Iran of Violating Ceasefire After Cargo Vessel Struck
President Donald Trump has called a drone attack on a Singapore-flagged cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz a “foolish violation” of the US-Iran ceasefire.
The fragile peace in the Middle East is being tested to the limit after a cargo ship was hit in the vital Strait of Hormuz, provoking a sharp and public response from US President Donald Trump.
The incident unfolded on Thursday when the Ever Lovely, a cargo ship flying a Singapore flag, was hit by a projectile while moving through the critical shipping lane. Fortunately, nobody was hurt, and the ship escaped with minor enough damage that it was able to keep moving and safely finish its journey.
Trump Calls Out a "Foolish Violation"
It didn't take long for the situation to escalate into a political standoff. Taking to his Truth Social platform on Friday, President Trump pinned the blame squarely on Tehran, accusing them of breaking a ceasefire agreement.
According to Trump, Iran deployed at least four attack drones into the area targeting commercial vessels. While he stated that US forces managed to intercept and knock down three of them, one got through—solidly hitting the upper deck of what he described as a "large and very expensive cargo-carrying ship".
For Trump, the message was blunt: "Obviously, this is a foolish violation of our Ceasefire Agreement."
Iran’s Warning to the Shipping World
While Iran hasn't directly responded to Trump's specific accusations, their state media carried the remarks alongside a very pointed reminder from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
The IRGC issued a fresh warning to the international community, making it clear that they view the Strait of Hormuz as entirely under Iranian jurisdiction. They warned that any ships trying to use routes set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) without coordinating directly with Iran are taking an "unacceptable and completely dangerous" path.
Trade Corridors on Edge
The fallout from the attack was immediate, shaking confidence in one of the world's most critical trade and energy pathways:
Evacuations Halted: In a sign of just how tense things have become, the United Nations' maritime agency temporarily halted its ongoing plans to evacuate more than 11,000 sailors who have been stranded in the region.
The Attack Zone: According to the British maritime security agency UKMTO, the Ever Lovely was hit about 7.5 nautical miles southeast of Oman's port of Dahit while strictly following recommended shipping lanes.
With the ship's owners confirming the vessel is safe and still operational, the immediate physical danger has passed. However, the political aftershocks are just beginning, putting the spotlight back on a highly volatile region where even a single strike can put global trade on a knife-edge.
