Giorgia Meloni recalls 2023 India visit and "million votes" Delhi joke.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has shared her fond memories of the grand reception she received during her visit to India in 2023. She disclosed how the streets of New Delhi were decked with posters carrying messages of welcome and gratitude.
Formal bilateral agreements, tightly scripted press conferences and rigid handshakes are the hallmarks of international diplomacy. But in her new book, Giorgia’s Vision, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reminds us that behind the grand state dinners, world politics is often driven by very human connections and simple, thoughtful hospitality.
Meloni recounted a heartening behind-the-scenes memory from her state visit to New Delhi, of the very warm welcome she got from India – a welcome that clearly moved her very much.
The Small Act That Created an Impact
On arrival in the Indian capital, Meloni was greeted by streets lined with giant billboards and posters featuring her face and a simple ‘Welcome’. That kind of grand greeting is routine protocol for visiting world leaders, but it was a subtle, thoughtful change on her last day that really caught her eye.
As she was returning to Rome, she looked out the window of her motorcade on the way to the airport and saw something she did not expect. Overnight all the billboards had been changed. The welcome signs had been changed to a more personal message: "Thank you for visiting.
That quick turnaround was not merely efficient logistics but real warmth and parting hospitality for Meloni, who felt she was truly appreciated, rather than just another foreign dignitary ticking off an official itinerary.
"Million Votes New Delhi"
The sheer scale of the poster campaign didn't just make Italy's prime minister squirm; it also led to some light-hearted teasing from her inner circle.
Italy's Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani saw her face on practically every street corner and, turning to her with a laugh, joked:
If you contested from this very New Delhi constituency with all these posters, you can easily secure a million votes.
This joke became a favourite running laugh among the Italian delegation and remains one of the most charming anecdotes from the trip.
The Global Politics of the Human Face
In her book, written in conversation with journalist Alessandro Sallusti, Meloni uses the story to make a larger point about global statecraft. Her trip did succeed in forging very serious ties between India and Italy in the fields of technology, defence and trade, but she argues that real partnerships for the long term are built on personal trust and mutual respect.
Sometimes a heartfelt 'thank you' written on a city billboard can do more to cement international friendship than hours of formal negotiations behind closed doors.
