Germany and France Sign New Defense Pact to Strengthen European Security

The deal was announced this week by leaders in Berlin and Paris. Both governments hailed it as a big step towards a stronger, more coordinated European defence.

The deal also calls for closer cooperation on long-range weapons systems and on improving missile defence capabilities. The goal is to better enable both countries to respond to emerging threats and to enhance overall military readiness in Europe, officials said.

The partnership will also involve joint development of advanced defence technologies and better coordination on future security strategies.

Rising tensions fuelled by Ukraine war
The shift comes as European nations rethink defence in the wake of the ongoing war in Ukraine and broader geopolitical uncertainty. 

Germany and France, the EU's two biggest economies and military powers, said more cooperation was needed to ensure regional stability and to reduce reliance on external partners for core defence needs.

A senior German government official said: “Europe has to be able to defend itself. “This deal is about making that happen.”

The Berlin-Paris pact is likely to influence EU defence policy for years to come and encourage other European countries to join similar efforts, analysts say. NATO is still the foundation of European security, but officials say the pact is a means of strengthening Europe’s own capabilities within that structure.
