Talk to car and bike owners around the country today and you’re bound to hear a common, frustrated complaint: odd engine trouble. Since the nationwide push towards E20 petrol, a fuel blended with 20% ethanol, drivers are pulling into local repair shops with clogged fuel injectors, sputtering engines, damaged fuel pumps and mysterious moisture build-up in their tanks. While the government touts the green initiative as a vital step in cutting carbon emissions and reducing oil import bills, a very different, expensive reality is playing out for everyday motorists on the ground.
Mileage drops and old-school engines
Mechanics in big and small cities are getting a steady stream of cars brought in with the same symptoms. Drivers are seeing a significant reduction in fuel efficiency, with some reporting decreases of 5% to over 20%, particularly in older cars and bikes.
Naturally, people are pointing fingers at the chemical nature of ethanol. Ethanol draws moisture from the air and burns differently than pure gasoline. Drivers are convinced it’s silently destroying rubber seals, corroding metal fuel lines and gumming up systems designed for lower blends like E10. This increasing concern is reflected in independent surveys, with a sizeable proportion of vehicle owners unhappy with the pace of rollout, especially when it leads to unanticipated repair bills.
Government reassurances versus driver reality
Of course the centre has fought back against the panic. In its latest parliamentary update, officials said extensive field trial results and data from major automotive manufacturers show there is no official widespread evidence of E20 fuel being associated with catastrophic engine failures or abnormal component corrosion. They say small efficiency losses are often a matter of driving style or car maintenance, not the fuel, and that millions of cars are already running on the blend without blowing up.
