Damascus Cafe Bomb Blast Kills At Least Five, Injures Several in Syria's Capital

A powerful bomb blast ripped through a packed cafe in the heart of Damascus, killing at least five people and wounding 16 others. The afternoon blast hit Al-Nasr Street, ripping through a popular local business just yards from the Palace of Justice, one of the busiest districts in the Syrian capital.

Emergency workers and ambulances raced to the scene, pushing through heavy traffic to ferry victims to nearby hospitals. Officials warned the death toll could rise as several of the injured remain in critical condition.

The target is jammed with people

The attack happened in a place that made it especially dangerous. Every day, thousands of visitors come to the Palace of Justice, and the surrounding area is full of markets and constant street traffic.

This particular cafe is a regular stop for the courthouse crowd. The explosion occurred during a busy afternoon rush, and the establishment was crowded, trapping many victims under debris right after the detonation. The explosion was caused by an explosive device planted inside the building that rattled shopfronts across the street, officials said.

The Challenge of Security

The attack presents a serious security challenge to local authorities who are continuing efforts to restore long-term stability after years of conflict. Daily safety in the capital has improved markedly in recent months, but sporadic and localised attacks continue to hamper recovery efforts.

“Bad actors” are actively seeking to destabilise the country just as the city is working to restore baseline security, said Maher Marwan, governor of Damascus, shortly after the incident. It will take time to make sure everything is stable to the last detail, but security measures are getting better day by day,” he said.

The Investigation Opens

The whole neighbourhood was immediately cordoned off by the Syrian security forces in order to secure the site and prevent possible secondary explosions. So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the bombing.

“We are in the process of collecting evidence from the scene and reviewing public and private surveillance cameras throughout the district to determine who is responsible for the attack.”
