‘Compromised’ Jibe Deepens Punjab Congress Rift as Randhawa and Raja Warring Trade Barbs

The internal politics of the Punjab Congress are at a boiling point as a leadership civil war tears through the state opposition. This open rebellion threatens the party’s structural unity just as internal mutinies did ahead of the previous assembly elections. While national party managers try to maintain an uneasy organisational balance, a signature political weapon used by the central leadership has boomeranged, turning a favourite national phrase directly inward.

Weaponizing the Vocabulary

The friction points inside the state unit have fundamentally ruptured its public messaging. During an intense organisational review in Chandigarh, a phrase traditionally reserved for political opponents was deployed to settle internal scores.

Emerging from an 80-minute strategy session with the All India Congress Committee (AICC) Punjab in-charge Bhupesh Baghel, Gurdaspur MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, a powerful voice aligned with former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi’s camp, sent a blunt message to the press. Standing alongside Channi, Randhawa declared that the party does not need a "compromised president" and must have a leader who can speak boldly and decisively.

The Boomerang Effect

The choice of words exposes an incredibly awkward blind spot for the high command. For months, the central leadership has relentlessly used the term "compromised" as a core linguistic asset to attack the central government's administrative choices.

By launching that exact label inside their own house, the rebel faction effectively intercepted the national messaging playbook and redeployed it against state unit chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring. The open revolt arrives at a crucial time, with the Channi-aligned group digging in its heels and announcing a complete boycott of official party programmes called by Warring just months before the 2027 assembly elections.

The Passive-Aggressive Counter

The sudden verbal assault triggered a lightning-fast, highly loaded counter-offensive from the state leadership. Raja Warring hit back within hours, launching a passive-aggressive manoeuvre that twisted the accusation back toward his rivals.

• The Loaded Agreement: Rather than offering a standard defensive denial, Warring caught observers off guard by matching Randhawa's sentiment. "Who is compromised? Has he taken any names?" Warring asked reporters, arguing that if any leader were genuinely compromised, they would have no business staying in the party.

• The Sleeper Cell Jibe: The state chief then escalated the conflict into a full-scale psychological war, stating that Congress cannot afford "sleeper cells" or compromised leaders. He pointedly noted that several leaders within the ranks had faced accusations of backdoor meetings with rival political outfits, including the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the BJP.

While central mediators like Bhupesh Baghel desperately attempt to downplay the Chandigarh gathering as an "informal lunch", the rebel coordinators have made it clear that the ball is now entirely in New Delhi's court.
