BSNL Launches ₹1.34 Lakh Satellite Phone in India: Features, Price and Key Benefits

State-run telecom operator BSNL on Thursday announced the launch of its Global Satellite Phone Service (GSPS) handset in India at a price of Rs 134,166, including all taxes. Developed in partnership with global satellite network provider Inmarsat, it completely bypasses traditional cellular towers. Instead, it connects directly to satellites in orbit to provide voice calling and SMS in totally off-grid locations.

However, this is not something you can run out and buy at your local electronics store. Due to strict national security regulations, owning or using a satellite phone in India without explicit permission and rigorous customer verification from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is illegal.

To buy the device, buyers have to go through a rigorous customer acquisition process with BSNL and provide explicit documentation detailing the intended purpose, duration and specific geography of use. Airtime segments: commercial and government tiers.

For government entities, BSNL’s monthly plan is priced at ₹3,500 and offers 16 postpaid or 20 prepaid minutes. Alternatively, government users can opt for a prepaid plan at ₹38,500 per annum with 240 free minutes. After the free minutes, the out-of-bundle rate is fixed at ₹18 per minute/SMS.

Commercial users also have the option of a standard monthly plan of ₹5,835 with 30 free minutes for prepaid and post-paid. There is also a commercial prepaid plan of ₹64,185 that gives you 360 free minutes. For extra baseline usage, there’s a premium postpaid tier for ₹11,670 per month for 60 free minutes for businesses with higher needs. Commercial Tiers: Rs.25 for each call and text message above the limit. Separate prepaid top-up vouchers are also sold from ₹200 to ₹10,000.
