To improve the accuracy of electoral rolls and ensure that only eligible citizens are enrolled, the Election Commission has introduced the new requirement. The move comes as voter lists are being revised in several parts of the country.

New rule for first-time voters

The amended process will require first-time applicants for voter registration to provide information that is linked to their parents’ SIR records, where applicable. Officials say the extra paperwork will help election officials check the eligibility of applicants and reduce the possibility of duplicate or incorrect entries on the electoral rolls. Existing voters, however, will follow the procedures applicable to their status during the revision exercise.

Improve accuracy of electoral roll

The Election Commission has said the requirement is aimed at improving the integrity of the electoral database.
