Andy Burnham Sworn In as UK Prime Minister, Vows "New Direction" for Britain

The former mayor of Greater Manchester has been officially sworn in at Buckingham Palace. He arrives at Downing Street with the UK under economic pressure, with public services stretched and public expectations of change rising.

Burnham’s appointment and a new Labour leadership mark the end of Starmer’s tenure. Power was transferred peacefully, with Burnham promising a government of stability, reform and restored faith in politics. Mr Burnham, speaking in his first comments outside Downing Street, said, "Politics. People want to see a government that delivers. “That’s the job I’ve been given, and that’s the job I’m going to do.

Focus on economy and public services

The new Prime Minister’s No. 1 priority was economic recovery. Burnham vowed to deal with the cost-of-living crisis, offer greater support to the National Health Service and put money into new housing and public transport.

He also said that policy decisgiven,over the next couple of months will be about helping working families and spurring long-term growth.

New cabinet, new priorities: 

Now it’s Burnham’s cabinet's turn to be in the spotlight. Political observers expect changes in key positions as he begins to assemble a team of people to carry out his agenda. 

The government is expected to announce plans on healthcare, education, climate and foreign policy shortly. Burnham’s experience of running a major city region may involve a focus on devolution and regional growth.

Great challenges ahead

Burnham assumes power in a climate of uncertainty at home and abroad. He is fighting inflation and public sector funding and voter anger at home. He will have to address security issues overseas, trade and Britain’s role in the world.
