Akhilesh Yadav Briefly Detained During Opposition Protest in Delhi
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav was briefly detained by Delhi Police on Tuesday while taking part in an Opposition protest in the national capital.
Opposition parties called the protest on a range of political and public issues. The leaders were taken away from the site by police later as part of security arrangements.
Opposition chiefs meet in Delhi
Several opposition leaders and workers gathered in central Delhi to protest what they termed as immediate political and public issues.
Akhilesh Yadav, along with party workers and other leaders of allied parties, joined the protest.
Protest site detention
Akhilesh Yadav and a few of his supporters were detained by the Delhi Police during the protest which was being controlled by the authorities.
Visuals from the spot showed the SP chief being whisked away by police personnel from the venue of the protest.
Political responses
Opposition parties condemned the detention, saying peaceful protests were being crushed.
SP workers and other opposition leaders demanded immediate release of those detained and questioned the police action.
Security heightened
A heavy police presence was deployed in the protest area to ensure there was no breach of public order. Traffic and movement in the area were restricted as officials monitored the situation.
After a brief period the leaders were released.
