West Bengal Rain Forecast: Heavy Showers to Shift Towards Gangetic Districts From July 22
The IMD has forecast rain and thunderstorms across West Bengal, with heavier showers expected to move towards Gangetic districts from July 22. Kolkata is likely to remain cloudy with light to moderate rain.
A Wet Spell for the State
The heavy downpour that hit the northern districts over the weekend is set to move south. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in its regional bulletins said active monsoon conditions will start shifting intense rainfall activity from sub-Himalayan West Bengal to the Gangetic districts. Northern sections have been experiencing heavy periods, but weather systems are changing to bring rain to the southern sections of the state.
This transition, meteorologists say, is a classic mid-monsoon shift where low-pressure formations and upper-air cyclonic circulations change the direction of rain-bearing winds. For days, ferocious cloudbursts hit districts in the Himalayan foothills, causing rivers to overflow, fields to get waterlogged and localised disruption. The weather engines are now slowly gliding down the map, promising much-needed relief to parched agricultural belts in the south even as local administrations remain on standby for possible water accumulation.
Kolkata's Southern Districts on Vigilance
As for Kolkata and adjoining metropolitan areas, the immediate forecast indicates an overcast sky with spells of intermittent light to moderate rain over the next few days. But with the rain system shifting to the middle of the week, the districts across Gangetic West Bengal, including parts of Howrah, Hooghly, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore, will receive much heavier downpours.
The IMD has warned of heavy spells which may be accompanied by surface winds gusting at a speed of 40 to 50 kmph and sudden flashes of lightning in isolated pockets. Commuters and daily wage earners advised to keep umbrellas and rain gear handy
