Up to 5 Cups of Coffee a Day May Be Safe for Most Adults
Good news for coffee drinkers: moderate coffee intake is not associated with an increased risk of heart disease, according to guidance highlighted by the American Heart Association.
Most healthy adults can consume up to five cups a day. But experts still warn that too much caffeine can cause problems – especially if you're sensitive to caffeine.
Moderate coffee is given the thumbs up
Research shows up to five cups of coffee a day does not substantially raise the risk of cardiovascular disease in healthy people, the AHA says.
In fact, coffee contains antioxidants and other compounds that, in moderation, can be beneficial for your health.
“The dose is the key,” said one expert. “For most people, a few cups a day can fit in just fine with a heart-healthy lifestyle.”
Too much caffeine, not enough
It’s not the coffee. It’s the caffeine in the coffee. Too much can cause:
- High blood pressure
- Palpitations or a fast or pounding heartbeat
- Insomnia and sleep disorders
- Anxiety, jitters, and nervousness
- Belly ache
If you’re sensitive to caffeine, you might experience these effects with just 1-2 cups.
Limits are different for everyone
Doctors say that tolerance can vary a lot. Certain groups should take extra care and discuss with their doctor about the right amount of coffee for them, including
- Women who are pregnant
- People with irregular heartbeats
- People with uncontrolled high blood pressure
Other health conditions and medications can also play a role in how caffeine affects you.
Even it out
The AHA isn’t saying, “Drink more coffee.” The truth is, coffee can be part of a healthy diet — if you don’t go overboard.
“Experts recommend avoiding excess sugar, cream and high-calorie syrups that can cancel out any benefits.” Match your coffee with:
- A well-balanced diet
- Work out regularly
- Lots of water
- Sleep quality
“Coffee is not a magic drink for your heart,” one heart specialist said. “But for most people, that’s fine in moderation.”
So if you’re on cups 3 or 4, you’re probably okay. Listen to your body – and maybe skip the late-night espresso.
