Tej Pratap Yadav Sent to 14-Day Judicial Custody in Bihar Protest Violence Case

After his arrest he was brought to court, and his lawyers said they would seek formal bail.

The court sends him to judicial custody  
Both sides argued before the Patna court, which sent Tej Pratap to judicial custody on Thursday. The case pertains to the incidents that took place during the bandh when the protesters had blocked the roads and had clashed with police in some parts of the city.

The court ordered him to be kept at Beur Jail till the investigation is over.

Police cite role in violence at protest  
Tej Pratap was present at the protest site, and his alleged activities led to clashes, damage to public property and disruption of law and order, police said.

An FIR has been registered against several persons, including an RJD leader. The police are poring over footage of videos, social media posts and witness statements to try to piece together what happened.

Officials said a large turnout, traffic jams and stone pelting were witnessed at the protest in Patna. No serious injuries were reported.

Application for bail expected  
A regular bail application will be moved in coming days,” Tej Pratap’s lawyer told reporters. The defence is expected to argue that the charges are politically motivated and that he was present only to support students.

“We respect the court’s ruling. “We’ll be applying for bail at the appropriate time,” the lawyer said.

Investigation  
Police said the investigation was ongoing and more people could be questioned. They are also going through CCTV footage from protest sites to identify those involved in vandalism, authorities said.

Opposition parties enforced the Bihar Bandh, demanding answers on the NEET-UG controversy. Students protesting changes in the examination system have held demonstrations in various states.

The 14-day custody period will be over before the case goes to court.
