Veteran actress Shilpa Shirodkar recently spoke about a terrifying experience she had while shooting for the song Sanam Mere Sanam on the sets of the 1991 film Hum. She almost drowned. In an episode of India’s Best Dancer Season 5, Shilpa said the accident is still one of the scariest experiences of her career.
Govinda to the rescue!
Shilpa revealed that she got stuck in deep waters while shooting, as she didn't know how to swim. She was shooting the sequence with actor Govinda when he realised she was missing underwater. Though not a trained swimmer himself, he quickly jumped into action and managed to pull her to safety – avoiding what could have been a tragic accident.
No Safety Protocols on Movie Sets
Recalling the incident, Shilpa said that the shooting conditions those days were very different from what they are today. She was in a body of water, shooting, wearing heavy leather trousers, with only a few crew members around. There were no life jackets, no rescue teams, and no proper safety equipment on the set, and as the shoot progressed, she was scared.
A memory that still haunts her
In a special video message, Govinda also fondly remembered the incident, joking about the fact that both of them struggled in the water before he managed to save her. “It was a genuinely terrifying experience at the time, though Shilpa laughs as she remembers it. The incident also brought to light the dangers actors often faced on film sets in the 1990s, a time when safety measures were far less stringent than today.

Shilpa shared the incident, and fans hailed Govinda for his quick thinking and bravery. The incident has also sparked discussion about the need for proper safety arrangements on film sets. The entertainment industry has much stricter safety standards now. Trained stuntmen and protective gear are used for stunt scenes and water shoots.
