Legionnaires' disease is a severe form of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria, which love to breed in warm, stagnant water. Because of this, health inspectors have zeroed in on building air conditioning systems, aggressively testing large commercial cooling towers. Property owners whose towers tested positive have been ordered to immediately drain and disinfect their systems.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), while the illness is completely treatable with antibiotics if caught early, roughly 10% of those infected unfortunately succumb to complications. This outbreak comes as a sharp reminder for the city, following a major scare last year in Harlem that sickened over 100 people and resulted in seven deaths.
