Ram Temple Donation Row: SC Seeks Response From State, Ram Mandir Trust On CBI Probe Demand

The Supreme Court Monday issued notice to the Uttar Pradesh government, the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust and others on a plea seeking a CBI probe into alleged irregularities in donations made for construction of the Ram Temple at Ayodhya. The court issued notices but did not comment on the veracity of the allegations and made it clear that the matter will be considered only after all the respondents have filed their replies.

The petition states there were financial irregularities in the management and use of donations collected for the building of the Ram Temple. The petitioner has sought an independent probe by the CBI saying that there should be transparency and accountability in dealing with public donations made for a project of national importance. The Supreme Court during the hearing decided to seek responses from the concerned authorities before taking any further decision.

The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust has denied allegations of financial irregularities in the past and said all donations and expenses are managed under the financial procedures laid down. Trust officials say accounts are regularly audited and all transactions are above board. The Trust is likely to file its stand in the apex court on the latest petition.

The government is to take a position

The Uttar Pradesh government has also been asked to file its response. The state is expected to clarify its stand on the allegations and the petitioner’s demand for a CBI probe. Legal experts say that the Supreme Court issuing notices does not mean that the Court has accepted the allegations but is a normal judicial process to ensure that all parties are heard before any decision is made.

There is a lot of interest in the case as the Ram Temple is a religious and national issue. Legal analysts say the court is focused for now on whether there is enough to warrant further inquiry. Until the answers have been filed and the arguments heard, the allegations have not been proved true. The matter is likely to come up for further hearing after the respondents file their replies and the Supreme Court will decide the future course of action.
