A disturbing criminal case in Pakistan has taken a political turn after one of the victims alleged that a relative of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar was demanding $100,000 to release her. The claim was made in a statement recorded in front of a judicial magistrate as part of the ongoing investigation into the alleged kidnapping, sexual assault, and extortion of two foreign women in Lahore.
The victim said she and another woman had gone to Pakistan after being invited by people they had met through cryptocurrency dealings. Shortly after they arrived, they were reportedly taken to a house where a group of armed men held them against their will.
Victims say they were kept captive
The woman said the accused called on them to give access to their cryptocurrency accounts and threatened them several times to transfer money. She said the group demanded $100,000 in exchange for their release and threatened them with dire consequences if they did not agree.
The victim also said she was sexually assaulted while being held captive and that the other woman was also threatened. She informed investigators that the accused contacted the people she knew through her mobile phone and forced them to fix the ransom amount.
Later, according to her statement, the accused claimed the money had been received and decided to move the victims to another location. The women managed to escape and get help from residents before calling the police, it is reported, when the vehicle they were being transported in had a crash en route.
Four suspects in custody
Pakistani police have arrested four suspects in the case. One of the suspects is Muhammad Raza Dar, who authorities say is a relative of Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar. The accused were remanded to police custody by a local court as investigators questioned those involved and evidence was still being gathered.
The police are also probing whether the alleged crime was related to a previous financial dispute between the victims and the accused over a cryptocurrency transaction. Officials have said the inquiry is ongoing and all allegations are being looked at.
