Political Firestorm: Mamdani Weighs Legal Move Against Netanyahu's NYC Visit

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said his administration is investigating whether it can legally detain Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he visits the city for the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) later this year. Mamdani’s remarks have ignited a fierce controversy over the powers of local authorities, the limits of international law, and the diplomatic protections that visiting foreign leaders enjoy.

The comments come amid ongoing international scrutiny of the Gaza conflict and renewed speculation over an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant for Netanyahu. Israel dismisses the charges against its prime minister and says the ICC has no jurisdiction.

Mamdana Cites International Accountability

“Netanyahu is a war criminal,” Mamdani said in a recent interview, adding that he believes leaders accused of serious violations of international law should face consequences. His administration is consulting with legal experts to see if there is any role for New York City to play, legally, if Netanyahu comes to the city for the annual UN gathering, he said.

Mamdani said all decisions will be taken in accordance with the existing laws and no decision has been taken.

The proposal has raised grave legal questions. Such foreign heads of government generally have diplomatic protections when visiting the United States, experts said, and matters relating to international relations are typically the domain of the federal government, not city officials.

Critics have dismissed the proposal as unrealistic and politically motivated. Several politicians have said that New York City’s mayor has no authority to detain a visiting foreign leader, warning that such comments could hurt diplomatic relations.
